Born March 1, 1956 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

1975-1976: Lithuanian SSR National Philharmonic, staff inspector.

1983: graduated from Leningrad State University (Zhdanov University), degree in political economy. While a student, assistant at Rot Front confectionery manufacturer.

1983: executive secretary at Lithuanian SSR Academy of Sciences.

1983-1990: teacher of political economy at Department of Political Economy, Vilnius Higher Party School.

1988: received Ph.D degree at the Academy of Social Sciences of the USSR Communist Party's Central Committee.

1990-1991: academic secretary at Lithuanian Institute for Economics.

1991-1993: European Department at the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations of the Republic of Lithuania, director.

1993-1994: Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, Economic Department, director.

1994-1995: Minister Plenipotentiary at the Lithuanian Mission to the EU.

1996-1999: Minister Plenipotentiary at the Lithuanian Embassy to the U.S.

1999-2000: Deputy Finance Minister.

2000-2001: Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economy.

2001-2004: Finance Minister.

2004: appointed EU commissioner in charge of financial programming and budget

May 17, 2009: elected President of Lithuania.
