Born in the town of Kaluga.
1971: Graduated from Moscow State University with a degree in geology and geophysics.
1986: Earned PhD in Geological and Mineralogical Sciences.
1991: Became a professor.
1997: Became an associate member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
1971 - 1976: Worked at Tulaugol factory.
1976 - 1984: Headed a laboratory and a department at the Moscow Region Design and Research Coal Institute.
1984 - 1995: Deputy director and director of Ukraine's State Research and Design Institute of Mining Geology, Geomechanics and Engineering.
1994 - 1998: Member of parliament and chairman of the parliamentary Budget Committee.
1996 - 2002: Chairman of Ukraine's State Tax Administration.
November 2002 - February 2005: First deputy prime minister and finance minister under Yanukovych.
2006: Elected to parliament, where he headed the Budget Committee.
August 4, 2006: Appointed first deputy prime minister and finance minister under Yanukovych for the second time.
November 2007 - March 2010: Member of parliament from the Party of Regions and finance minister in Yanukovych's shadow government.
March 2010: Appointed Prime Minister of Ukraine.
Azarov is married with a son.
