On July 12, Baltiisky Zavod will hold a flag-raising ceremony on the new icebreaker Sankt-Peterburg and hand it over to the customer, Rosmorport.
The Sankt-Peterburg is a multimission vessel capable of accomplishing both typical tasks of icebreaker assistance and, as distinct from many previously built line diesel-electric icebreakers, fulfilling the following duties:
- towing large-sized sea facilities;
- taking part in salvage and rescue operations.
For these purposes, the ship is provided with diving equipment and a pressure chamber. The icebreaker is also equipped with a high-capacity fire-fighting system that can deliver water at the rate of 10,000 cu m/hr to put out blazes on board ships.
In addition, the vessel has equipment to deal with oil spills; search and rescue equipment, including a compact-sized remotely-controlled submersible to look for sunken objects at depths down to 300 m with a robot arm to lift small-sized articles; a towed side-scan Asdic to inspect bottom surface and relief and look for sunken objects.
The icebreaker has a ship-borne computer network and is provided with software to operate it at a modern technical level.
The presence of such equipment greatly increases the efficiency of search and rescue operations and expands the icebreaker's capability in conducting different kinds of search, special and underwater engineering tasks.
Of much importance is the high degree of automation of the icebreaker, which has practically halved crew numbers, compared with line icebreakers built in the 1980s.
The captain of the icebreaker Sankt-Peterburg is Yury Akhromkin.
