The message reads, in part:
"Please accept my sincere condolences on this sad day. Your husband was an outstanding Lithuanian statesman, a wise politician and a wonderful man.
"For years, he was not only the leader of Lithuania but also a symbol of the country. He has always been respected in Russia for his professionalism, candour and decency. We have always valued his efforts to improve cooperation and promote neighbourly relations between our two countries."
