Delhi – the capital of India

The city of Delhi is part of the Delhi union territory. The city's population is more than 14 million.

The capital of India is divided into Old and New Delhi. The architectural centre of New Delhi is the presidential palace and the surrounding parliament building, central ministries and the prime minister's secretariat.
Rajpath, the Indian capital's main thoroughfare, runs from the presidential palace to the India Gate military memorial, where an annual military parade and other celebrations are held on January 26 - the Day of the Republic. Major government buildings, embassies, luxurious hotels and large shopping centres also are located in New Delhi.

The old city, which dates back to the 17th century, retains many of the characteristics of the medieval East - narrow side streets and alleys, considerable overcrowding, lack of planned development and an enormous number of small shops.

Delhi is a large administrative, economic, commercial and cultural centre. The city and the surrounding areas are home to a wide range of industries: textiles, garments, knitting, leatherworking, footwear, glass, ceramics, metalworking etc. Crafts and hand weaving are of great importance.

There are more than 10 universities in the city, as well as the National Museum of India, the National Gallery of Modern Art, the National Academy of the Arts, the Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences etc.
