Baltic Sea Action Summit

The Baltic Sea Action Summit hopes to implement measures to safeguard the Baltic Sea environment.

The summit, to be hosted at Helsinki's Finlandia Hall, will draw over 400 participants from ten Baltic region countries, including presidents, prime ministers, businessmen, as well as representatives from NGOs.

The Russian delegation will be headed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, while the Swedish delegation will be led by Carl XVI Gustaf. The summit will also be attended by Latvian President Valdis Zatlers, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, and Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen.

The summit was initiated by Finnish President Tarja Halonen, Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and the Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG). The Baltic Sea Action Group is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) established in 2007 by Cargotec Oyj board chairman Ilkka Herlin, Saara Kankaanrinta and Anna Kotsalo-Mustonen, specialists at the John Nurminen Foundation for marine research.

The Baltic Sea Action Group works to unite and coordinate the efforts of state bodies, business, public and scientific organisations to preserve the Baltic Sea environment. BSAG supports various innovation projects in this area.

Baltic Sea Action Group activities are based on the Foundation for a Living Baltic Sea. BSAG is financed by both corporations and individuals. A considerable part of financing comes from innovation specialists and consulting services.

The BSAG International Advisory Board includes Finnish President Tarja Halonen, Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb, HELCOM chairman and Russian Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Igor Maidanov, Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, Royal Dutch Shell and Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila, and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation director Axel Wallenberg.
