The President of the Republic of Turkey's residence is situated in one of Ankara's most prestigious regions - Çankaya.
Construction of the Presidential compound started on the hills in the southern part of the city in 1923 after it was announced that Ankara would be the capital of the new Republic of Turkey. Initially the President of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk used to work in a modest two-storey building typical of that period of Turkish architectural history. Currently, that building houses a museum (the Museum Villa).
Development of the site was gradual, but currently the compound is comprised of 438,000 square metres which, in addition to the Museum Villa, include the Çankaya Villa (Pink Villa, official Presidential Residence), the Glass Villa (guest residence), a new service building, a new Presidential Administration facility (General Secretariat), the Headquarters for the President's Aides-de-Camp, the State Supervisory Board, the headquarters for the Administrative and Financial Affairs and Security Departments, rooms for press conferences and meetings, a building for the fire brigade, social facilities, a garage, greenhouses, sports grounds and residential accommodation.
