Born August 30, 1954 in the Vitebsk Region.
Higher education: degree from the Mogilev Pedagogical Institute (1975), degree from the Belarusian Agricultural Academy (1985).
1975 - 1977: volunteered in the Frontier Troops of the Soviet Security Agency (KGB) as an instructor at the political department at the Brest frontier detachment of the Western Frontier District.
1977 - 1980: served successively as the Young Communist League secretary of the Mogilev municipal food retail authority, as instructor at the Oktyabrsky District Executive Committee in Mogilev, and as senior secretary of the district educational society Znaniye in Shklov, the Mogilev Region.
1980 - 1982: volunteered to serve in the army as deputy company commander for political work.
1982 - 1987: deputy chairman of the Udarnik Collective Farm, deputy director of the Shklov building materials plant, secretary of the Communist Party committee at the Lenin Collective Farm in the Shklov District.
1987 - 1990: director of the Gorodets Collective Farm in the Shklov District of Mogilev Region.
1990 - 1994: member of the Supreme Council (parliament) of the Republic of Belarus, active on the ad-hoc parliamentary commission for investigating companies owned by the state (an anti-corruption commission). Headed the commission from April 1993 to July 1994.
On July 10, 1994, Lukashenko was elected President of Belarus for a five years' term. In November 1996, his term was extended to 2001 in accordance to a revised 1994 Constitution adopted by a national referendum.
He was elected for a second term on September 9, 2001 with 75.65% of the vote according to official data.
In September 2004, Lukashenko called a referendum on removing constitutional limitations on the presidential term in office in Belarus. The vote was held on October 17, the same day as the parliamentary election.
The voters had to decide whether they allowed first Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to run for another term and whether they accepted a revision of Part 1 of Article 81 of the Belarusian Constitution.
The first clause was preserved in the revised article, "The President is elected for a term of five years directly by the people of Belarus through a comprehensive, free, equal and direct election by a secret ballot," while the second one was removed: "The same person cannot be elected president for more than two successive terms."
According to the Belarusian Central Election Commission, 77.3% of the total number on the election list supported the changes, with voter turnout as high as 90.2%.
In March 2006, Lukashenko was re-elected by winning over 80% of the vote, according to official information.
Lukashenko is the Commander-in-Chief of the Belarusian Armed Forces, head of the National Security Council, and president of the National Olympic Committee.
He is an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Social Sciences and chairman of the Supreme State Council, the highest authority in the Union State.
On April 2, 2001, he was decorated with the Russian Order For Services to the Fatherland, 2nd Class.
He is married, with three sons.
