Prime Minister Vladimir Putin addressed a working breakfast with representatives of the Japanese business community

Vladimir Putin: Mr Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues,

I believe this is a very positive and very important event in terms of its line-up and various opportunities that can emerge as a result of direct contacts between our business communities.

Mr Chairman has just mentioned the positive dynamic of our economic ties. Indeed, the bilateral trade turnover and direct investment volumes continue to expand. We are implementing major projects, including those in the sphere of energy and in other fields. Our national economies are vitally interested in their development. Still I think this is a side-effect of more important achievements. The creation of an atmosphere of trust and a greater commitment to expanding bilateral relations in various spheres is a more important achievement in our relations. To my mind, this is the most important accomplishment made by national governments and our people over the past few years. I am convinced that such attitudes and joint efforts will allow us to tackle major problems, including the conclusion of a peace treaty.

I am convinced that we will continue to find new spheres of mutual interest and will chart and implement many new projects. The Russian Government will provide every support for the plans of its Japanese and Russian partners, Russian businessmen, in order to implement such cooperation.

Thank you very much for organising this meeting.
