Born June 30, 1954 in Stepanakert, Nagorny Karabakh, into a family of workers.
Higher education: In 1976 graduated from the evening department of the philological faculty of Yerevan State University.
1974-1979: fitter at the Yerevan electric plant.
1979-1988: department head, second secretary, first secretary of the Stepanakert Komsomol City Committee; head of its propaganda department; aide to the first secretary of the Nagorny Karabakh Autonomous Region CPSU Committee.
1989-1993: chairman of the Self-Defence Committee of the Republic of Nagorny Karabakh.
1990-1993: deputy of the Armenian Supreme Council.
August 1993: appointed Armenian Defence Minister.
May 1995: appointed the head of the State Department of National Security, National Security Minister.
1996: appointed the Minister of Internal Affairs and National Security.
June 1999: appointed Armenian Minister of National Security.
November 1999: appointed head of the Armenian Presidential Office, secretary of the National Security Council (NSC) of the Armenian President.
May 2000: appointed Armenian Defence Minister (maintaining the position of the NSC secretary).
2006: joined the Republican Army of Armenia (RAA).
July 2006: elected chairman of the RAA Council.
April 4, 2007: appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia.
June 7, 2007: re-appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia following the May elections.
February 18, 2008: elected President of the Republic of Armenia. Inauguration took place April 9, 2008.
Serzh Sargsyan chairs the Yerevan State University Trustee Council, and is the president of the Armenian Chess Federation.
Awarded with orders of the Battle Cross of the Republic of Armenia, 1st Class, of Tigran the Great, and of the Golden Eagle by the Nagorny Karabakh Republic.
Married, has two daughters and one granddaughter.
