The Palace of the Republic is one of the largest multi-purpose public buildings in the Republic of Moldova. The Palace of the Republic was built in 1984 under the project designed by architect A. Zakrevsky. Until 1991, the building was known as the Palace of Friendship, but was renamed in 1994 as the Palace of the Republic.
The Palace of the Republic is located in the centre of Chisinau, not far from the buildings where the Government, Parliament, and President of Moldova reside; it is also located in close proximity to the Codru hotel complex. The Palace has 12 two-tiered conference halls with a total floor area of 13,000 square metres. They include the Grand Hall (up to 1,000 seats), two conference halls (up to 200 seats each), four halls that accommodate 50 seats each, and a 100-seat café.
The Palace of the Republic is the main venue of major international meetings and events. The summit of the CIS was held there in 1997.
