Islm Karimov, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan

Born January 30, 1938, in the city of Samarkand.

Graduated from the Central Asian Polytechnic Institute and the Tashkent Institute of National Economy. PhD in Economics.

His career began in 1960 as an assistant foreman at the Tashselmash plant. Held engineering posts at the Chkalov Tashkent Aviation Production Association.

1966-1983: worked at the State Planning Committee of the Uzbek S.S.R.

1983: Finance Minister of the republic.

1986: Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Chairman of the State Planning Committee of the Uzbek S.S.R.

1986: elected first secretary of the Kashka Darya regional committee of the Uzbek Communist Party.

June 1989: First Secretary of the Uzbek Communist Party Central Committee.

1990: elected President of the Uzbek S.S.R. (from August 31, 1991 the Republic of Uzbekistan) at a Supreme Council meeting of the republic.

December 1991: elected President of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the first general election. A referendum held in March 1995 extended his powers until 2000.

At elections in January 2000, elected President of the Republic of Uzbekistan for another five-year term (according to Article 90 of the Constitution of Uzbekistan, the president has no right to hold this post for more than two terms). A 2002 referendum extended presidential powers from 5 years to 7 years. At the December 23, 2007 presidential election, Islam Karimov was re-elected for a second seven-year term.
