The Diaoyutai State Guesthouse

Located in the western part of Beijing, the guesthouse's history stretches back more than 800 years. It used to be a country palace for Chinese emperors' rest and entertainment. In the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234), Emperor Zhangzong built a platform for angling ("diao yutai" in Chinese) there, and since then the Residence has been called the "Imperial Angling Place". Qianglong, a Qing Dynasty emperor who liked the local landscape, made his residence in the Diaoyutai.

In 1958, on the threshold of the official celebration of the People's Republic of China's 10th anniversary, when heads of state and government of a number of countries were invited to take part in the celebration, Chinese leaders resolved to accommodate distinguished foreign guests on the premises of the Diaoyutai Nature Park, which since then has been called the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

The old building of the Imperial Residence became the centre of the park complex, in addition to which the construction of 19 variously styled mansions started. In 1959, on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, a state guesthouse was opened there.

From the time the construction was completed to the present day it has accommodated more than 800 heads of state and government as well as world-renowned political, religious and public figures, economists, scientists and cultural workers from different countries.

Top Chinese state and party leaders hold receptions for high-ranking foreign guests on the premises of the State Guesthouse, and important events of international scale, meetings and negotiations are held there. In a token of respect to foreign states' traditions, numbers 1 and 13 were omitted when numbering the mansions.

The overall area is 420, 000 sq. m, including the lake's surface area which covers 70, 000 sq. m; the area of the buildings is 165, 000 sq. m.
