The Olympic Village

The Olympic Village is one of the central Olympic facilities. It is located in the vicinity of Beijing's main Olympic stadiums with special bus routes direct to the more distant sports facilities. The official opening of the Village took place on July 29, 2008. Chinese sportsmen were the first to move into the Village. In honour of this delegation the Chinese flag was ceremonially raised in the central square.

20 nine-storied and 22 six-storied blocs of flats, and 11 comfortable guesthouses as well as office buildings and other facilities including restaurants and a clinic are located on 66 hectares of land. 16 000 sportsmen and official guests will stay there for about a month.

The sportsmen live in apartments comprising three double rooms, a living room and two bathrooms. All living quarters have a standard design and the only thing that distinguishes one from another is the length of the bed, which will conform to the height of the guest.

The apartments are designed in a "fusion" style - European furniture goes with oriental design features such as terracotta sculptures and minimalist flower compositions.

All lights on the Village premises use solar energy. The village also uses a system for gathering and using rainwater for technical purposes, and special water treatment systems and water-saving technologies are introduced.

When the Olympics are over the participants of the Paralympic Games will move into the Village.
