Hotel Matignon

Construction of the hotel began in 1721 by order of Jean Courtonne, the son of Luxembourg count. After the French Revolution of 1789 the mansion was owned by various persons, in particular the foreign minister Talleyrand, who liked to host luxurious receptions there.

In 1815 Louis XVIII exchanged the building for the Elysee Palace, owned by Countess Bourbon. Afterwards the mansion belonged to the sister of Louis-Philippe, and later to Count Monpansier. The Embassy of Austria-Hungary was there till 1918, and the secretariat of the State Council was situated in the building from 1935 till 1959. The office of the prime minister has occupied the mansion since January, 1959.

The mansion's elegant 18th century architectural interior, especially emphasized in the white saloon with gilded decorations on the ground floor, is well preserved. There are paintings by the famous French artist Fragonard in the halls of the first floor.

The mansion's garden is one of the largest and most beautiful parks in Paris.
