Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Born on July 6, 1940 in the village of Chemolgan, Kaskelen District, Alma-Ata Region.

Education: graduated from the Higher Technical School at the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant and the Higher Party School of the CC CPSU (by correspondence). Holds the degree of Doctor of Economics.

Experience:

1960: worked as a general worker at the building company Domenstroy, part of the Kazmetallurgstroy Trust in the city of Temirtau, Karaganda Region. Was Party Secretary of the Karaganda Metallurgical Plant and Second Secretary of the Karaganda Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan.

1979-84: appointed Secretary of the Central Committee of the Kazakhstan Communist Party.

1984: appointed Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Kazakhstan. July 1989: elected First Secretary of the CC of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan in July 1989. Was a member of the Politburo of the CC CPSU, People's Deputy of the USSR and of the Kazakh SSR.

February 1990: appointed Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR.

April 1990: President of the Kazakh SSR.

December 1991: ran, unopposed, for President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and was elected. In April 1995 a nationwide referendum extended Nursultan Nazarbayev presidency until 2000.

January 1999: re-elected President for another seven years.

December 4, 2005: in the course of the presidential election he was re-elected President (inauguration took place on January 11, 2006).

Since July 2007: Chairman of the People's Democratic Party Nur-Otan.

Married, with three daughters.
