Born on December 24, 1961 in Baku.
Education:
1982: graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).
1985: completed a postgraduate course at MGIMO. Holds the degree of Candidate of Sciences (History).
Experience:
1985-1990: a lecturer at MGIMO.
1991-1994: appointed director-general of the Orient Company in Moscow.
1994: appointed Vice President and since 1996 - First Vice President of the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
1995 and 2000: elected to the Milli Mejlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
August 4, 2003: appointed Prime Minister by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Since October 2003: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
October 15, 2008: re-elected President of the Republic of Azebaijan (was inaugurated on October 24, 2008).
Other:
July 1997: appointed President of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan.
Since 1999: deputy, and since 2001: First Deputy Chairman and since March 26, 2005: Chairman of the New Azerbaijan Party.
2001-2003: appointed the head of the Milli Mejlis' Permanent mission to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
January 2003: elected Deputy Chairman of PACE and member of its Bureau.
