The Ferry Dusika Stadium was built between 1972 and 1976. The stadium was named after Austrian cyclist Franz "Ferry" Dusika (1908-1984), a multiple winner of track-racing events in Austria and Europe and subsequently an organiser and sponsor of cycling races.
The Ferry Dusika Stadium is located on the outskirts of Vienna's Prater district, between the right bank of the Danube and the Ernst Happel Stadium. The Ferry Dusika Stadium is an indoor complex with an elliptical arena. The track and field area, surrounded by the running and cycling tracks, takes up the center of the arena. The stadium can hold approximately 7,000 spectators. The stadium underwent capital repairs between 1997 and 1999.
The stadium has the only indoor cycling track in Austria and is one of the country's biggest sports facilities for competitive track and field events and ball games. The Ferry Dusika Stadium has hosted a few major European and international competitions - the World Handball Championship in 1977, the World Track Cycling Championship in 1987, the European Volleyball Championship in 1999, and the European Indoor Track and Field Championship in 2002.
For the finals of the European Judo Championships in April 2010, organisers erected additional stands on top of the running and cycling tracks in order to bring fans as close to the competition space as possible.
