Werner Fayman, Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria

Werner Fayman was born on May 4, 1960 in Vienna.

Between 1985 and 1988, Fayman was a consultant at the Zentralsparkasse Bank. In 1988, he became director and chairman of the Viennese Tenants' Counselling.

A member of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), Fayman began his political career at the SPÖ's youth organisation, Socialist Youth, and was head of the organisation's Vienna branch from 1981 to 1987.

Between 1985 and 1994, Fayman was a member of the Viennese Landtag (land parliament) and the Vienna City Council. Between 1994 and 2006, as a member of the Vienna City Council, he supervised housing, housing construction and urban development.

Between 2007 and 2008, Fayman was Austria's Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology.

Fayman has been chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Austria since August 2008.

Fayman was sworn in as Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria on December 2, 2008.

Fayman is married with two daughters. He is interested in climbing, skiing, and chess.
