

Khakassia's administrative centre, Abakan, is located at the confluence of the Yenisei and Abakan rivers. The city has a population of 163,200, which is a full third of the republic's residents.
The city is home to 60% of the republic's small businesses and some of the largest regional industrial enterprises, such as the MaVR agro-industrial company, which is the largest processor of agricultural products and producer of food products in southern Siberia, the Ayan brewery, Abakanvagonmash, which manufactures railcars and high-capacity containers, and the Abakan experimental mechanical plant, which manufactures special equipment for Russia's timber industry.
Abakan has 24 secondary schools, 38 kindergartens, 75 libraries, including specialized libraries, two music schools, a visual arts school, two schools of arts, other cultural and health-services institutions, three stadiums and the Sports Palace.
One of the town's principal attractions is the Abakan Zoo. With over 600 animal species and 193 bird and reptile species, the Abakan Zoo is the largest zoo in Eastern Siberia. Over 40 species represented at the zoo are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation and the Red Book of the Republic of Khakassia. Among them are the cape lion, the Amur leopard, Siberian and Bengal tigers, the Pallas's Cat or "manul", the ocelot, the serval, the North American cougar, the falcon, the saker falcon, the eagle, the imperial eagle, the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon, the pelican, the mandarin duck, and the swan goose. The Abakan Zoo is a member of Euro-Asian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Another local highlight is the Skazka Puppet Theater, a five-time winner of Russia's Golden Mask Top National Award.
