Ilya Ulyanov Chuvash State University

The Ilya Ulyanov Chuvash State University was created from the Volga Branch of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute in 1967. CSU is a diversified higher educational institution training specialists for traditional professions as well as engineering, medical and other professions.

The university is the educational, research and cultural centre of Russia's Volga Federal District, with a high rating on the national list of universities. CSU takes an active part in the modernisation of the Russian educational system, including the Unified State Exam (EGE) experiment.

The University incorporates 25 faculties, training highly educated specialists in 56 professions, with 5, 13, 14, 43 and 8 courses for magistracy, bachelor, professional, postgraduate and doctorate degrees, respectively.
CSU has a student body of 17,739, including 10,622 full-time students, 1,104 evening course students and 6,013 extra-mural course students.

The introduction of new professional courses and the growth in attendance led to the opening of new departments. The number of departments has grown from 104 in 1996 to over 140 today.

CSU provides specialized education for more than just the Chuvash Republic. It is also an educational centre for the Chukotka Autonomous Area, Kirov Region, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan and the Republic of Mari El as well.

To strengthen its ties with foreign universities and research centres, Chuvash State University has entered into cooperation agreements with more than 25 international foundations, universities and organisations including the Hague University (Netherlands), Vienna University (Austria), Jönköping School of Engineering (Sweden) and Istanbul University (Turkey).

CSU continues to pursue cooperation with the global educational system, joining the International Association of Universities in 1997.

Today a total of 256 foreign students and trainees from 23 countries including the US, Japan, Western Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America attend Chuvash State University. All foreign students are enrolled in full-time study.

A major focus is the improvement of the teaching situation to make it compliant with the market economy and the main trends in science and technology.
