The Primorye Territory was formed on October 20, 1938. The territory covers an area of 164,700 square kilometres and has a population of 1,952,600, as of June 1, 2011. The region's administrative centre is Vladivostok, which is 9,288 kilometres (railroad distance) away from Moscow.

The Primorye Territory is one of the most rapidly developing areas in the Russian Far East. In the first half of 2011, the region's industrial output grew by 22.8%, as compared to the same period of 2010. The region's agricultural total output grew by 4.9% in all sectors and by 31.1% in its fishing industry.

In the period January – June 2011, the region's foreign trade turnover amounted to $3,703.2 million, which accounts for 120.5% of the January – June 2010 level.

In the same period, fixed investment totalled almost 102 billion roubles, representing a 60% increase. The bulk of investment was poured into transport (58%), energy, gas and water production and distribution (13%), and education (11%). Real estate deals, leasing and services received over 4%; the processing industry and communication received 3% and over 2%, respectively.

In June 2011, the annual inflation rate on the region's consumer market amounted to 3.8%, as compared to 3% in June 2010.

As of July 1, 2011, the official unemployment rate was at 2.2%, down 0.6% compared to the same period last year.

At present, the average monthly wage in the region has reached 24,916 roubles. The montly nominal per capita income averaged 16,546.3 roubles in the period January – June 2011.
