Forestry accounts for a large share in the economies of Russia and Finland. In order to discuss different issues of bilateral cooperation in this sphere, in 2002 the leadership of both countries decided to hold regular Russian-Finnish forestry summits. At that time Moscow hosted the first such meeting, and the second took place in Helsinki in 2004.
The main goal of the forum is to coordinate long-term approaches to the development of forestry complexes in both countries, elaborate weighted mutually profitable decisions aimed at developing active practical interaction between the authorities and the business communities of Russia and Finland and to enhance bilateral cooperation for sustainable development of forestry.
The Third Russian-Finnish Forestry Summit will be attended by Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Finland Matti Vanhanen.
It is expected that the forum will be attended on the Russian side by First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov, Minister for Industry and Trade Viktor Khristenko, and Minister of Agriculture Yelena Skrynnik, and on the Finnish side by Minister of Economic Development Mauri Pekkarinen, as well as very representative delegations of the Russian and Finnish timber industry business, regional state authorities of both countries, industrial unions and associations, and industrial science.
During the plenary session the forum will focus on the establishment of an attractive investment climate in the timber industry, modernisation of the timber industry, improvement of the forestry legislation, enhancement of bilateral cooperation in the development of forest resources and support of priority investment projects, different aspects of customs tariff policy and additional instruments stimulating the development of this industry, such as subsidising of interest rates.
There will be three round tables at the Summit:
- "Investments and Innovations in the Timber Industry";
- "Forestry and Forest Resources";
- "Development of the Personnel and Scientific Potential of the Timber Complex".
The forum will also organise an exhibition and presentation of innovative projects of young Russian specialists working in the timber sector.
This year the Summit will be attended by approximately 400 delegates.
