City of Vladimir

Vladimir is located 180 km from Moscow.

The city, founded in 990 A.D. by Duke Vladimir The Red Sun, is located off a highway connecting Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod.

Population: 336,000.

The city hosts major engineering, metalworking, electrotechnical, instrument-making, chemical, construction, consumer goods and food industry enterprises, as well as high technology enterprises specialising in glass-making, fiberoptic, polymer chemistry, factory automation and materials technology.

Major production facilities include the Avtopribor Plant (car parts), Tochmash (products for the nuclear industry, special products and consumer goods), Electropribor (radio-measuring devices and special products), Vladimir Engine and Tractor Plant (tractors and tractor engines), chemical plant (wide variety of polymers), Vladimir Electromechanical Plant (electric engines), and POKOM (food products).

This year, the total value of the city industry's product shipments, work and services from January through August amounted to 36 billion roubles, while the figure for the same period in 2008 was 35.9 billion roubles.

The average salary from January until July 2009 amounted to 16,217 roubles, which is a growth of 10.2% against the same period in 2008.

As of September 1, 2009, the total number of unemployed was 5,439 people. There were 2.5 unemployed per each vacancy offered by the Employment Centre.

In 2009, 849 new flats were commissioned with a total area of 69,200 sq m, which makes 90.1% of the figure for the same period in 2008.

Vladimir has many historical buildings, including the Assumption Cathedral, St Dmitry Cathedral and the Golden Gate, all built in the 12th century and registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the Vladimir and Suzdal National History and Architecture Reserve. Vladimir is also the starting point of the Golden Ring, a popular tourist route.
