The town of Salekhard was founded in 1595. The name comes from two words in the local Nenets language - sale, meaning village or settlement, and khard (cape). Salekhard can thus be translated as a village on the cape.
In 1938, Salekhard was granted city status. It is the world's only city located on the exact latitude of the Arctic Circle.
In 1995, the city began its development as a full-fledged administrative centre of a Russian constituent region. Federal executive bodies are represented in the city, as are major oil and gas companies. A targeted district programme for accelerating the city's development was adopted ten years ago.
The total municipal area of Salekhard is 846 square kilometers; its permanent population was 42,700 as of January 1, 2009. Its residents are for the most part employed in the public sector - over 50% of adults work for the national or municipal governments, in healthcare, education, culture and the arts, and social services.
Salekhard has eight general education institutions, as well as the Yamal Multidisciplinary College, five specialized sports facilities, including an ice rink, the Zakharevich weightlifting centre, the Aviator sports centre, the Geolog sports and arts centre, and the Anatoly Karpov Yamal Polar Chess School.
There are 44 functioning sports facilities, including one year-round ice rink, two swimming pools, 18 gyms, seven workout rooms, one outdoor hockey ground, two shooting galleries, one automobile racetrack, four outdoor sports grounds in different neighbourhoods, and eight school outdoor sports grounds.
There are several facilities for culture and the arts, including Geolog, the Youth Culture Centre, the Nasledie Culture and Entertainment Centre, the Obdorsk historic settlement and museum, a library system (including three libraries - a main library, a municipal library, and a children's library), and a children's art school.
In addition to the municipal centres, there are also cultural and entertainment institutions of regional importance, such as the Arts and Crafts House, the Regional Ethnic Cultures Centre, the Shemanovsky Museum and Exhibition, the national electronic library, the Culture and Business Centre, and the Laptsui Culture and Art School.
