Having laid the flowers on the grave of the first President of the Chechen Republic Akhmad Kadyrov, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said, in part:

"Yesterday was the birthday of Akhmad Kadyrov, the first President of the Chechen Republic, and a friend of mine. This man did a great deal for the Chechen people. Owing to him, the war ended. He gave up his life for Chechnya, and for Russia. His birthday was observed yesterday.

I came here several years ago. Today, I've also come here to pay respects to the memory of this courageous man. He is a man whom we will remember for a long time. We will always remember what he has done for Russia and for Chechnya.

He was not only courageous but also very talented. He knew what he was doing, and he did this with his eyes open. He lived his life with a purpose, and he gave it up for a reason.

By doing what he did, and by dying at his combat post as he did, he saved the lives of many people because he had laid the foundations of peace in Chechnya.

We will always remember him. Always."
