In terms of overall social and economic development, Khakassia ranks 40th in the Russian Federation, according to the Russian Ministry of Economic Development standards.

Its Gross Regional Product amounted to 74 billion roubles in 2008, or 2.1% of the total GRP of the Siberian Federal District. In the first half of 2009 the Republic's GRP dropped by 5.6% on the same period of last year.

In per capita GRP, Khakassia, according to the Ministry of Economic Development, ranked 8th in the Siberian Federal District and 53d in the Russian Federation in 2008. In the volume of investment per capita the Republic of Khakassia ranked 11th in the Siberian Federal District and 79th in the Russian Federation in 2008.

The key industries in Khakassia are non-ferrous metallurgy, power generation, the fuel industry, machine-building and metal-working.

Industrial production in the Republic of Khakassia increased by 4.8% in 2008 compared with 2007, and by 5.6% January-June 2009 compared with January-June 2008.

Agriculture is focused on livestock breeding (dairy and meat production, sheep and horse breeding). The soil and climate in the region make it possible to grow grain and fodder crops and some fruit and vegetables.

Agricultural output increased by 0.8% in 2008 over 2007. The crop harvest showed a 3.9% increase while livestock breeding dropped slightly to 99.5% of the previous year's level.

Demographic statistics show a population decrease between 2000 and 2007. However, this trend began to reverse in 2007 leading to an overall population increase in 2008.

As of July 1, 2009 official unemployment in the Republic stood at 2.9%.

As of January 1, 2009 there were 600 small companies in the Republic (10th place in the Federal District) which employed a total workforce of 19,000. The average nominal wage in January-May 2009 was 15,273 roubles, which fell short of the average for the Siberian Federal District (15,731 roubles) and for the Russian Federation (17,669 roubles). That puts the Republic in seventh place in the federal district and in 32d place in the Russian Federation.

The Republic generated 53.7% of its consolidated budget locally (as of March 1, 2009).
