Mineralnye Vody Airport reconstruction plan

Mineralnye Vody Airport is one of the largest airports in southern Russia, and ensures sustained air traffic between the North Caucasus, other parts of Russian Federation, and foreign countries.

The airport has the technical facilities to receive the following aircraft year-round, day and night: Ilyusin Il-86, Il-62 and Il-76TD, Tupolev Tu-154, Tu-134, Tu-204 and Tu-214, Yakovlev Yak-42, Antonov An-124-100 (An-124) and An-12, RJ-85, Boeing 727-200, Boeing 757 and modifications, Airbus А340, ЕМВ-120, АТR-42 and its modifications, as well as all types of helicopters. The airport includes facilities to house 41 aircraft.

At present, the airport is not in compliance with European standards, thus lagging behind many major Russian regional airports such as Sochi, Novosibirsk, Kaliningrad and Yekaterinburg, as regards to equipment, appearance and level of service.

Routine repairs produce only short-term effects and cannot help to ensure fully secure flights. The existing runway was built in 1978 and has outlived its design life. Five hundred million roubles ($15.5 million) are needed to rebuild it.

To increase the airport's capacity, the construction of a second runway began in 2006, though construction has been halted since March 2009, when Sberbank closed the airport's line of credit.

The plan includes the reconstruction of the passenger terminal, which was started by Federal State Unitary Enterprise Kavminvodyavia in 2000, and then picked up by Kreditinvest in 2005. However, due to Kreditinvest's lack of necessary funds, the project can only be realized with the help of a private-public partnership that would involve government financial assistance through the Investment Fund of the Russian Federation.
