The Baikal Museum of the Irkutsk Research Centre at the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was launched by the decree of the branch's presidium of January 22, 1993.
The museum is located at the Irkutsk Research Centre. The museum director is Vladimir Fialkov, Ph.D. in Geology. The museum boasts 61 personnel, including eight research and technology associates, of which two hold doctoral degrees and six have Ph.D. degrees.
The museum's scientific research is focused on explorations of Lake Baikal's ecosystem development. The work is performed in five fields:
- research of the laws of evolution on the ecosystem's living creatures under abiotic changes on Earth and use of up-to-date informational technologies to feature research results;
- research of biodiversity, gene pool and introduction of the lake area's rare and extinct species at the museum's arboretum;
- research of the lake ecosystem's elements using the methods of experimental biology;
- remote real time monitoring of Lake Baikal's living beings;
- research and development of scientific and educational programmes using up-to-date informational technology.

The museum's activities are mostly geared to fundamental scientific research and applied projects in geosciences, particularly solving issues related to Lake Baikal's evolution and the preservation of its unique ecological system.
