Khabarovsk

The city of Khabarovsk is the capital of the Khabarovsk Territory and has also been the capital of the Far Eastern Federal District since 2000.

Founded: May 31, 1858. Population: 579,200 (registered maximum: 630,000). Population density: 1,499 people per sq m. The city is divided into four municipal districts: Central, Zheleznodorozhny, North, and South.

Khabarovsk is located in the central part of the Far Eastern Federal District, and is considered a main regional transport hub, hosting more federal and regional institutions than any other city in the region.

The city was founded on the banks of the Amur River by the 13th Siberian Battalion soldiers led by Captain Yakov Dyachenko. The military settlement was named Khabarovka in honour of Russian pioneer Yerofei Khabarov by Governor General Nikolai Muravyov-Amursky.

The railway line connecting Khabarovsk and Moscow is 8,533 km long, while the air route is 6,075 km long. The time zone is seven hours ahead of Moscow (midnight in Moscow is 7 am in Khabarovsk). The city is located on the elevated right bank of the Amur, which has an uneven relief. Khabarovsk has an area of 386.4 sq km and stretches 52 km along the riverbank.

By the beginning of the economic reforms in 1990, Khabarovsk had formed into a versatile economic centre. Now, the city's industrial sector comprises 86 main production facilities. The key industries include power generation, timber and metals processing, engineering, food and fuel production. Transport accounts for the bulk of the city's gross output. The municipal sector includes 28 companies dealing in seven industries. In recent years, the city has received heat and electricity without interruption. All the thermal power plants are fuelled with natural gas supplied from Sakhalin via a pipeline. In 2008, 269,300 sq m of newly-built housing was commissioned, which is close to the pre-1985 figures.

The city has 23 higher education institutions and the country's major college branches, 16 specialised secondary educational establishments, 17 vocational schools and over 100 high schools, which make Khabarovsk the educational centre of the Far Eastern District.

The city has four state-run museums including one art museum, four professional theatres, writer and composer organisations, and actor, artist, filmmaker and journalist unions. The territory hosts a philharmonic and a symphony orchestra. The state-run Far Eastern research library is known across the country.
