On April 25, 2006, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. announced its plans to establish a new assembly facility in St Petersburg. On June 13, 2006, during the 10th St Petersburg International Economic Forum, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the city authorities and an agreement with the Russian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade on the construction of a new assembly plant in St Petersburg. In a resolution made in February 2007 by the St Petersburg administration, the construction of the Nissan assembly plant was recognized as a strategic investment project. On July 8, 2007, an official ground breaking ceremony was held. The plant inauguration ceremony is scheduled for June 2, 2009.

The Nissan assembly plant was built in a new industrial zone in north-western St Petersburg near Kamenka village. The planned annual production capacity is 50,000 vehicles. During the initial production phase, about 750 workers will be required for a one-shift operation. Investments totaled $200 million. The quality of manufacture will conform to Nissan Production Way (NPW) international standards, a manufacturing method applied in all Nissan plants around the world.
