During his visit to St Petersburg, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin monitored the implementation of the government programme on providing housing to World War II veterans

In Kolpino, Mr Putin and St Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko, visited Vera Babysheva, a victim of the siege of Leningrad, who received a new studio last December.

Giving her a bouquet of flowers at the door of her studio, Mr Putin said: "We came to see how the city is carrying out its programme for veterans."

The host showed the flat to her guests and invited them to join her at the table for tea. "I have worked at Izhorskiye Zavody for 36 years. I have lived all my life in a multifamily apartment, but last year I received a new flat. I'm gradually turning it into a cozy place. Now I am very happy about my living conditions," she said, adding that she regularly received aid from the city authorities.

"St Petersburg has a major social programme to support war veterans," Mr Putin confirmed.
