Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited the Izhorskiye Zavody (Izhora Plants) Joint Stock Company in St. Petersburg. He inspected the welding-and-assembly facility and attended the inauguration of a major 120-ton steel-smelting furnace.
It will produce components of up to 600 ton, for equipment used in nuclear power plants, petro-chemical facilities, and heavy rotors for steam turbine generators.
The project was carried out in two years with the support of the German company SIMAG.
Speaking German, Mr Putin told representatives of the company about the project's importance for Russian industry. "This is one of the few projects to have been carried out so quickly. This is large high-tech investment," he said.
Mr Putin inquired about the furnace's technology, and concluded that it would save time and energy.
