

Total floor space of residential housing in the Astrakhan Region is 19 million square metres, out of which about 2 million square metres (11%) include dilapidated buildings deemed unfit for habitation. These buildings are currently home to 38,000 families.
Residential housing in Astrakhan city totals 9.9 million square metres, with 1.78 million square metres in a dilapidated state, accommodating 32,000 families.
In 2008, contractors performed construction works throughout the region worth 26.8 billion roubles, up 11.2% from the 2007 level in terms of expenditure. This development included construction, expansion and overhaul of over 430,000 square metres of housing (up 51% from 215,400 in 2007).
A total of 120,000 square metres of residential space was commissioned in the region's rural areas, up 12% from 108,400 in 2007.
According to the Federal Statistics Service, the Astrakhan Region commissioned 111,800 square metres of housing in the first quarter of 2009, up 93.8% year-on-year. The region ranks third in Russia's Southern Federal District and seventh in Russia in terms of construction growth rate.
The 20 high-rise buildings to be commissioned in the first half of 2009 will provide housing to 2,500 families. With development projects financed by private investors, the number of families to move into new apartments this year may exceed 3,000.
