UDOMLYA TOWN

The town of Udomlya is the capital of the Udomlya District in the Tver Region. It is located 125 km to the north of Tver. The town's total area is 9 sq km, with a population of about 32,000 people. Udomlya is part of the Union of Nuclear Territories and Businesses. The Governor of the Tver Region, Dmitry Zelenin, became President of the Union in 2005.

Thirty-five years ago the construction of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant began, and with it the intense development of the Udomlya District, and the town of Udomlya. A number of facilities have been built since that time, including: children's art school, a centre of children's creativity, an education and training centre, the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant's public relations centre, the Svetlitsa hotel, new health and fitness facilities, the large medical centre, and the Seagull culture and entertainment centre. The town is adorned with the Prince Vladimir Cathedral, whose construction was financed by the nuclear power plant. There are seven schools in the town, and one of them, School No 5, is a specialised school working closely with the nuclear power plant and with universities, which train members of staff who work in the nuclear industry. Many graduates from schools in Udomlya follow in their parents' footsteps and choose a profession in the nuclear power industry.
