Founded in 1995, the Russian Orthodox classic gymnasium is the only school of its kind in the Samara Region. The gymnasium was established with the active support of the Samara Diocese, Moscow's Saint Tikhon Theological Institute and the Samara Humanities Gymnasium, and is headed by Archpriest Dimitry Leskin.
The Russian Orthodox classic gymnasium is part of the system of religious education. Its main tasks and objectives match the Russian Orthodox Church's religious education curricula.
The academic plan prioritises theology and humanities, including such subjects as Russian history, Russian language and literature (the best Russian literary masterpieces), public speaking (the basics of rhetoric and declamation), the history of Russian culture and art, the Law of God, the Holy Scripture and the Gospel. Students learn English from the first grade on, French from the third grade on, and later study ancient languages. Music, including solfege, playing musical instruments, signing and choreography, are mandatory. The school offers courses on the history of world culture, art and music.
Students stay at the gymnasia all day. Studies begin at 8 a.m. and last until 1 p.m. After that, students spend their time with instructors until 5.30 p.m. During that time, they go for walks outdoors, eat lunch and dinner, prepare their home assignments and relax. Apart from teachers, each class has its own schoolmistress, who looks after students during the day.
Each class has between ten and 15 students. Boys and girls study separately from the third grade on.
The gymnasium, which has a state license and accreditation, now has 180 students, including preschoolers.
In October 1999, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia visited the gymnasia. On November 21, 2000, the gymnasium consecrated its Chapel Of All the Saints Who Shone Forth in the Russian Land.
