The Krylov Central Shipbuilding Research Institute is one of the oldest research institutes in Russia. It dates back to 1894, when the first Russian model tank of the Naval Establishment was consecrated in the presence of Tsar Alexander III. The tank was built at the initiative of the Marine Technical Committee, which was supported by the great Russian scientist Dmitry Mendeleyev. In those days, Russian shipbuilders felt an acute need to conduct model experiments, as theoretical methods of ship designing and building were becoming less effective.
The institute is the main and leading full-cycle shipbuilding research organisation, whose tasks are to develop naval and commercial fleet concepts, design, build, operate and decommission naval ships, commercial vessels and offshore engineering structures.
The Krylov Institute has developed nuclear submarines and nuclear icebreakers, and has launched other milestone shipbuilding projects in Russia.
The institute is a member of several prestigious international shipbuilding organisations and regularly participates in major international fairs, conferences and symposiums. Its active work in foreign markets resulted in the conclusion of over 450 contracts with companies in Britain, Germany, Italy, India, Canada, China, Norway, South Korea, the United States, France and other countries.
Today, the Krylov Central Shipbuilding Research Institute is a multi-disciplinary research centre that successfully resolves the most challenging tasks of the shipbuilding sector.
In recent years, the institute has greatly enhanced its practical capacities through the incorporation of the central design bureau Baltsudoproekt, which is renowned globally as the designer of the largest Russian tankers, container ships and other vessels, and also the Lot Research Institute which keeps the data bank of standards for naval and commercial shipbuilding.
The Krylov Institute employs around 2,500 personnel, including 60 professors holding doctoral degrees in technical sciences, physics and mathematics (more than half of them are elected members of separate academies within the industry), and about 300 Ph.D. holders.
The Director of the Krylov Central Shipbuilding Research Institute is Prof. Valentin Pashin, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Technical Sciences, State Prize Winner of the USSR and the Russian Federation, Krylov Prize Winner of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Hero of the Russian Federation.
