Kirishi Dictrict

The Kirishi Municipal District is a large energy industrial centre in the Leningrad Region. There are 6 municipal units within the district: the urban settlements of Kirishi and Budogosch, and the rural settlements of Kusinskoe, Pchevskoe, Pchevzhinskoe, Glazhevskoe. The district consists of 75 villages, the town of Kirishi, and the municipal borough of Budogosch. The land area of the district is 304.5 hectares. The permanent population of the district is 66,304 residents, and including the town of Kirishi - 54,770 people.

The district is located along the banks of the Volkhov River, one of the largest rivers in northwest Russia. Legend has it that the name of the town comes from the name of the first Novgorod resident who settled there. The Kirishi Regional Museum has authentic artifacts from the Neolith era: axes, knives, combs, plummets, and shards of clay utensils found in the town's vicinity.

The Kirishi District is distinguished by its stable economic development. Modern manufacturing facilities with developed infrastructure are being built in the district, and manufacturing is the district's leading industry.

There are 15 large and small enterprises in the district: OAO Kirishi Bread-Baking Factory, OOO Fortuna, OOO First Wood Processing Plant, OOO Leda, OOO PO Kinef, OOO Polistirol, OAO Rusjam Kirishi (renamed Kirishi Glass Factory on June 30, 2008), KiGRES power plant branch, OAO KRK, MP UVKKH, and others.

For a period of 9 months in 2008, the district's economy produced and delivered manufactured goods and services totaling 30,629.2 million roubles, which was 21,8% more in today's prices than for the same period in 2007. The share of manufactured goods makes up 89% of the total production volume. Processed goods make up the largest share of all manufactured goods - 23,625.2 million roubles (68.6 %); production and delivery of power, gas, and water amount to 7,004.0 million roubles (20.3%).

There are five companies providing agricultural services: ZAO Molodezhny, SPK Budogosch, SPK Osnichevsky, ZAO Berezovskoe, and FGUSP Kirishsky of the Defense Ministry. As of October 1, 2008, the average number of employees working in agriculture was 551, and their average monthly salary per 12,058.9 roubles with an increase rate of 39.5%. The volume of agricultural production for the reported period was 224.4 million roubles - an increase of 44.6% (in actual prices).

As of January 1, 2009, there were 1,551 companies and organizations registered in the Kirishi Municipal District. Private companies are predominant in the district's economy. The total employment number as of January 1, 2009 was 31,000 people.

In recent years, the district's manufacturing companies have launched new production facilities:

• the second and third automatic styrofoam plate production lines at the OOO PENOPLEKS-Kirishi",
• a styrofoam production plant with an output of 50,000 tons a year;

• a production line of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at the GUP Kirishsky Biochemical Plant;

• the first phase of beer bottle-production at the glass factory;

• the first wood treatment plant

• a module plant for concrete production

• the OOO Lamel Factory

• the first line for disposable packing materials under the Poliform brand name;

• a milk processing unit (2006) at the Kirishsky factory, Russian DM FGUSKHP, with an output of 8 tons per shift. Milk processing from local products was resumed after many years of interruption.

Capital investments for the 9 month-period in 2008 totaled 8 495.8 million roubles. Currently, several large investment projects are being implemented, the largest of which is the construction of a deep-conversion oil refinery that will create 1,719 new jobs. In 2008, the second phase of the Kirishi glass factory was launched. It will have an output of 226 million beer bottles a year and will employ 300 workers. The OAO OKG-6 branch of the Kirishi GRES power plant has launched a new steamgas engine construction.

In recent years, several social sphere facilities have been reopened after reconstruction: the Yunost Hotel, the Neftyanik swimming pool, the Youth Centre, and the Culture Centre. Also commissioned were a high pressure gas pipeline in Kirishi, a new 2,165 km long water pipeline from GRES to the city, a laboratory, two rural health posts, and two recreation centres.


In the Kirishi District there are 15 schools, 3 music schools, an arts school, 24 pre-school facilities, a vocational college, five affiliates of St. Petersburg University, a Centre for Youth Arts, a youth sports school, and an interscholastic training centre. The district has functioning library and recreational infrastructure.

There are 19 cultural facilities, clubs, a Youth Centre, and a Culture Centre in the Kirishi District. An art gallery was opened in 2001, and the Kirishi Regional Museum collections are constantly growing. On October 28, 2005, a virtual affiliate of the Russian Museum was opened at the KINEF Culture Centre. The affiliate is an informational and educational centre. It was opened under the "Russia" program, a long-term integrated program of the Russian Museum. The virtual museum is comprised of a multimedia cinema and education and information centres.

Fitness and sports facilities are actively developed. Currently, there are 111 sports facilities in the district. A swimming pool conforming to international standards was recently commissioned. The town of Kirishi frequently hosts regional, national, and international competitions in water polo, chess, aerobics, skiing, and swimming.

Reflecting the district's successful development, the town of Kirishi has won the title of "Best Medium-Size City in Russia," awarded in the framework of the "Golden Rouble" competition in the financial recovery of the Russian economy.
