The Saturn Research and Production Association (NPO) develops, manufactures and services gas-turbine engines for military and civilian aircraft, warships, and also turns out power-generating and gas-pumping units.
The Saturn NPO and its subsidiaries employ 24,500 people, including over 4,000 experts involved in R&D projects. The company's design bureau has about 100 specialists with PhD degrees, more than any other company in this sector.
Project SaM146
Saturn NPO and France's Snecma engine manufacturer are currently developing the PowerJet SaM-146 turbofan engine for new-generation regional jets. In April 2003, the SaM-146 engine won a Sukhoi Civil Aircraft tender for the best power-plant, due to be installed on Sukhoi SuperJet-100 medium-haul airliners.
The Russian and French governments are facilitating this project's implementation.
The Saturn - Gas Turbines company, a Saturn NPO subsidiary, supplies and installs highly effective ground power equipment on orders from Russian energy giant Gazprom, other oil and gas companies, wholesale and territorial generating companies, housing/municipal utilities agencies, municipal entities, and energy-intensive industrial enterprises.
Saturn - Gas Turbines designs, manufactures, assembles, activates, adjusts, and services 2.5-325 MW gas-turbine units for the ground gas-turbine power industry. The company also builds power plants and manufactures nuclear power plant equipment.
