Federal Bypass Highway M-53 Baikal near Krasnoyarsk

The Federal M-53 Baikal Highway is the main transport artery for the Krasnoyarsk Territory, linking together the various districts of the territory and its major industrial centres, the cities of Krasnoyarsk, Achinsk and Kansk.

At present, the federal highway carries international, interregional, and interdistrict commuters and intercity automobile traffic through the city of Krasnoyarsk and through surrounding residential areas. The fact that both through traffic and internal city traffic travel on this road increases the rate of accidents and pollutes the environment. The area surrounding the bypass road near Krasnoyarsk has a population of 1,044,100 people (34.6% of the total population in the territory). Besides, this federal road is the only road that ensures the functioning of the Siberia-Far East highway.

The opening of the bypass will increase capacity and improve safety on the Baikal-M-53 Highway which is part of the Trans-Sib International Transport Corridor; it will also improve the quality of life in Krasnoyarsk and ease negative environmental effects on the city. The opening of the section of the Chita-Khabarovsk Federal Highway will substantially increase the intensity of the traffic moving from the west to the east.

The total length of the bypass is 32.14 kilometers. Under the project, construction will proceed in two stages. The first stage will see the construction of a technical category II road (a surface width of 7.5 meters and a traffic speed of 120 kph), and the second stage will bring the road to category I parameters with four lanes.
Construction of the bridge began in 2005. Its length is 814.3 m.

Construction has cost 5.3 billion roubles in 2008 prices.
