The Islamic Centre and the Akhmat Kadyrov Central Mosque in Grozny
Construction of the Islamic Centre incorporating the mosque for 10,000 believers began in April 2006. The mosque is named after the first Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov.
The late President Akhmad Kadyrov wanted to build a mosque closely resembling the mosque in Konya, Turkey. His dream has now been realised.
The project was financed by the Akhmad Kadyrov Regional Public Foundation, with ChechenStroi acting as general contractor. State-of-the-art technology and equipment were used to build the mosque.
The mosque's four minarets stand 62.5 metres high. Moreover, it took Turkish workers a year to complete a custom-made marble armchair for the interior. A chandelier weighing several tonnes was also brought in from Turkey.
The Central Mosque will be the only Chechen mosque to accommodate women and disabled persons. Women will pray on the second floor, while disabled persons in wheelchairs can enter the mosque via a ramp.
The mosque's video equipment will broadcast the most important religious holidays and ceremonies all over Chechnya.
The six-hectare Islamic Centre will also comprise the Chechen Muslim Board, a madrasah, an Islamic university, a hotel, a dormitory for students, a religious library and a park.
