Kirishi SDPP. Combined Cycle Gas Turbine 800 (CCGT-800)

The Kirishi State District Power Plant is located 150 kilometres south-east of Saint Petersburg in the Leningrad region.

The major equipment of the Kirishi SDPP launched in 1965-1983. This includes a power plant (six boiler and turbine units) supplying heat and power to the town of Kirishi and the Kirishi industrial zone, as well as a condenser plant (six power units) providing current load and load regulation in the power networks of north-western Russia.

The CCGT-800 (a combined cycle gas turbine unit with a capacity of 800 megawatts) project operating at the plant is unique in Russia. For the first time in the history of Russian electric power, a power unit was updated with such a large-scale increase of capacity and performance. The updating of Power Unit No. 6 was implemented by linking two modern 279 megawatt gas turbines to the existing 300 megawatt steam turbine. The power unit launched in 1975.

The primary technology and innovation solutions implemented under the project were as follows:

- The power unit has a two-boiler single turbine unit, which includes two gas turbine units with heat-recovery boilers and one steam turbine;

- A principally new heat scheme for two new gas turbine units, heat-recovery boilers and the existing steam turbine;

- The EM-Alliance designed and made two new unique heat-recovery boilers;

- Power Machines (Siloviye Mashiny) updated (designed and made) the existing steam turbine K-300-240 at Unit No. 6 on the basis of gas-steam technology, which is unique in the Russian energy sector;

- Domestic automated control technologies are used on the gas-steam power generating unit's accessory equipment.

Following the project implementation, Unit No. 6's performance increased from 38% to 55%, and the specific flow of fuel equivalent decreased by almost 32%, from 324 grams of fuel per kilowatt hour to 221.5.

The launch of the CCGT-800 is the largest launch of generating equipment operating as a single unit in the past 30 years. CCGT-800 has become the most powerful gas-steam generating unit in Russia. With the CCGT-800's launch, the Kirishi SDPP's capacity grew to some 2.6 gigawatts.
