The Baltic Pipeline System (BPS-2)

The Baltic Pipeline System (BPS-2) is a new pipeline, part of the Druzhba pipeline network. Its launch will increase the total Russian infrastructure throughput capacity, diversify oil streams, manage streams in response to changing market demands or changing political situations, create new options for oil companies and attract oil exports to the pipeline system. The route crosses the Bryansk, Smolensk, Tver, Novgorod and Leningrad regions.

Today, a 1,000 kilometre oil pipeline between the Unecha Junction (Bryansk region) and the Ust-Luga seaport (Leningrad region) is ready for operation. Four pumping stations (Unecha, Andreapol, Oil Pumping Station No 3 and Oil Pumping Station No 4) can pump 30 million tonnes yearly.

The pipeline construction began on June 10, 2009.

The first pipeline junction was welded on the Unecha Junction. And the final golden junction was welded in October 2010. In May 2011, a hydraulic test of the Unecha-Ust-Luga pipeline was held. The pipeline was filled with oil by late October 2011. In mid-November, Transneft finished all of the adjustment work on the BPS-2 facilities.

The pipeline terminal is the Ust-Luga bulk plant with a total tank battery for 400,000 cubic metres (eight 50,000 cubic metre tanks and a delivery point). The bulk plant technology provides for an oil feed with a simultaneous stowage of two tankers with a deadweight of up to 150,000 tonnes.

The pipeline crosses over 22 rivers and rivulets. The builders constructed seven large underwater crossings, including across large rivers, such as the Dnieper and Dvina.

The pipeline has an efficient signalling system providing online monitoring of leaks and threats as a result of close contacts with intruders, including equipment and machinery, and thus prevents illegal incisions.

The new pipeline meets all industrial and environmental security standards. It has been built with modern insulation. Its section isolation valves have been made maximally leak-proof. It also has a remote control system. In addition, it has an industrial control system for polluters.
