The Kalinin nuclear power station is located in the north of the Tver Region, 4.5 kilometres from Udomlya. The distance to Tver is 125 kilometres, and to Moscow, 350 kilometres.
The Kalinin station uses VVER-1000 (WWER - water-water energy reactor) reactors. The station's generating capacity is 4,000 megawatts.
The nuclear power station employs 3,764 people. Currently personnel are being hired for the generating unit No. 4. The station's total workforce will add up to 3,864 people by the time it is launched.
According to statistics for the first ten months of 2011, the average salary is 47,706 roubles, the average salary of operating personnel is 50,226 roubles.
The Kalinin nuclear power station is a major power producer in central Russia. It supplies 70% of the total power generated in Tver Region. It supplies power to eight regions in Russia. The station provides power for 25% of the Tver Region's commodity production and 96% of Udomlya District industrial production.
During its 27 years of operation, the Kalinin station has supplied Russia's power system with more than 370 billion kWh of electric power including 22.4 billion kWh in 2010 and 18.86 billion kWh (104.3% of the planned total) in January-October 2011. In October 2011, the station ratio was 79.42% (under the plan, 70.74%).
The Kalinin nuclear power station has two sections. The first includes two VVER-1000 generating units, each with a capacity of 1000 megawatts. Generating units No. 1 and No. 2 were built in 1984 and 1986, and were launched in 1985 and 1987 respectively.
The second section includes generating units No. 3 and No. 4. Unit No. 3 was launched on December 16, 2004 (in use since November 2005).
Construction of unit No. 4 was suspended in 1991 with about 20% of the project completed. In 2007, following a State Expert Review Board (Glavgosekspertiza) decision and a Federal Service for Supervision of Environment, Technology and Nuclear Management (Rostekhnadzor) licence, the construction of the fourth generating unit resumed. The lead contractor is Nizhny Novgorod Engineering Company Atomenergoproject.
The Kalinin power station's generating unit No. 4 is a major investment project for the Tver Region, one of the key nuclear power project under construction in 2011.
The total cost for the unit's construction in 2007-2011 totalled 70 billion roubles. Part of the allocation was saved against the planned 78.9 billion roubles.
Unit No. 4 was constructed with some 5,000 workers and engineering employees from more than 30 construction and assembly companies.
With the launch of generating unit No. 4, the station's tax liability will increase by 441.7 million roubles (including 433 million roubles for the Tver Regional budget, and 8.7 million roubles to the Udomlya District budget). Total taxes paid in 2012 are expected to total 1.62 billion roubles.
The Kalinin nuclear power station's director is Leonid Martynovchenko.
