The city was founded in 1584 by a decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. Since the early 17th century, it has ranked among the largest seaports in northern Russia.

Arkhangelsk is located in the estuary of the Northern Dvina River at the confluence with the White Sea. City embankments stretch along local waterways for 35 km. Population: 355,700.

Arkhangelsk is a rapidly developing city with a ramified infrastructure. In January-June 2011, fixed-capital investment volumes facilitating its socio-economic development reached 3.9 billion roubles, or 29.6% more on the same period of 2010.

The city implements active housing-construction projects. From January-June 2011, local organisations of all forms of property have commissioned 11,500 sq. m. of housing.

The volume of shipped local products, as well as works and services provided by the city's major organisations and medium businesses, totaled 41.9 billion roubles, including 6.8 billion roubles for the processing industry; 11.3 billion roubles for electricity generation and distribution, as well as gas and water production and distribution; and 16.6 billion roubles for transport and communications.

The city has a pulp-and-paper mill, an engineering plant, several major wood-working enterprises and a merchant seaport. It also has well-developed fish-processing, algae-processing and seafood-processing industries.

Arkhangelsk is the region's industrial centre and the cultural-historic capital of Russia's Pomorye territory. It is the birthplace of northern culture, traditions and history. The Northern (Arctic) Federal University, one of the country's major educational establishments, is located in the city. It is made up of 16 institutes. There are three professional theatres in Arkhangelsk: the Lomonosov Drama Theatre, the Youth Theatre/Studio and the Puppet Theatre. The city also has numerous museums and exhibition halls.

In December 2009, Arkhangelsk was awarded the title "City of Military Glory" for the courage, fortitude and mass heroism of its defenders during the struggle for the Homeland's freedom and independence.
