Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK)

Open joint stock company Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) is a major iron and steel producer in Russia. Its proportion in total Russian metal-roll production was 18% in 2010. It is a major facility, an integrated iron-and-steel works conducting iron-ore raw materials preparation and iron processing. As of July 1, 2011, MMK Group includes 98 companies and produces a wide range of metal production including a predominant portion of products with a high added value.

In 2010, rolled stock production increased 16.9% against the previous year to 10.245 million tonnes. In January-June 2011, 5.232 million tonnes of rolled stock were produced (3% more than in the same period in 2010), including flat products, at 3.858 million tonnes.

The domestic market and the CIS countries are a priority for MMK. The proportion of shipped metal products in this area was 69% in 2010. Main consumers of MMK products are pipe companies, machine-building plants, and construction enterprises.

MMK export geography includes Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, Africa, North, Central and Latin America. In 2010, MMK exported 3.201 million tonnes of production, or 31% of total production. In January-June 2011, 1.648 million tonnes of rolled products were exported.

Total MMK Group personnel, as of July 2011, was 60,567, including 21,899 MMK employees.

In June 2011, the average MMK employee monthly salary was 39,468 roubles (having grown 20% against June 2010). The average MMK Group employee monthly salary was 35,141 roubles (a 22% upturn compared with June 2010).

In recent years, the MMK has implemented huge re-equipment projects and has launched new technologies, the former and the latter requiring considerable funds and work.

In 2002–2004, the MMK built and commissioned three unique assembly units: the 1700 Cold Rolling Mill with a yearly capacity of 800,000 tonnes of cold-rolled plate, a continuous hot-dip galvanizing unit with a yearly capacity of 500,000 tonnes, and a plastic coating line with a yearly capacity of 200,000 tonnes.

In 2005, MMK commissioned modern Stan 450 and Stan 370 bar-rolling mills with a yearly capacity of 780,000 and 550,000 tonnes, and in 2006, MMK commissioned a Stan 170 wire-drawing bench with a yearly capacity of 765,000 tonnes; all these measures completely updated bar-rolling production.

In 2006, MMK launched two 180- tonne high technological electric steel furnaces with a yearly capacity of four million tonnes, with continuous-casting machines.

In 2008, MMK commissioned its 2nd continuous hot-dip galvanizing unit.

In 2009, MMK completed and launched a Stan 5,000 hot-rolling plate mill and the No. 2 plastic coating line.

In 2010, MMK completed the construction of No.6 continuous casters maschine and a unit for secondary metallurgic purposes in the oxygen-converter plant.

Currently, at the Magnitogorsk platform, MMK is putting the finishing touches on a new Stan 2,000 cold mill unit (sheet mill workshop No. 11), and they are rebuilding a Stan 2,500 hot mill in the sheet mill workshop No. 4.

In 2007, MMK began to work on the project on building a modern metallurgic plant in Turkey.
