During his working trip to Krasnodar, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin inspects the construction of a multi-purpose stadium

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin started the inspection of a multi-purpose stadium with a basketball facility that is scheduled to open for customers next month.

Krasnodar Territory Governor Alexander Tkachyov told the prime minister that they will also open another nine training grounds for Olympic sports in the stadium. Somewhat later, the regional government intends to finish constructing a water sports complex and an ice rink seating 5,000 people.

"We hope to join the premier hockey league next year," the governor said.

"And win the world cup?" Putin asked.

"If there are a few players from Kuban on the team," Tkachyov replied.

The governor also familiarised the prime minister with the territory's plans to build a stadium seating 50,000 for the 2018 world championship cup.

Tkachyov told Putin about a programme for building sports facilities in small cities and villages in the Krasnodar Territory. He said the regional government allocates about 6 billion roubles annually to build sports facilities and promote sports.

"This means a great deal for towns and villages," Putin said. "Sports facilities start a new life there. It is also important to build sports facilities at schools," Putin remarked.

Sports, Tourism and Youth Policy Minister Vitaly Mutko, who accompanied Putin, told him that the Krasnodar Territory has recently built 450 sports grounds and 25 football fields. Owing to this, the number of Olympic athletes in the territory has increased several times. A few years ago, there were only 20-30. Today, 135 athletes are already training for the 2014 Olympic Games.
