Born in Kirovakan (now Vanadzor) on January 29, 1960.

Education

1983: Graduated with honours from the Leningrad Voznesensky Institute of Finance and Economics.

1987: Completed postgraduate studies, defending a thesis entitled "Planning for the Socio-Economic Development of a Region in the Case of Armenia."

1994: Studied at the International Law Institute in the United States of America, focusing on Lawmaking.

1996 and 1997: Studied at the Institute of Economic Development in the United States of America, specializing in Effective Bank Management.

Experience

From 1987 to 1990: Senior research fellow at the R&D Institute of Economics and Planning.

From 1990 to 1995: Deputy of the Armenian Supreme Council, chairman of the standing commission on fiscal and budgetary affairs.

From 1995 to 1998: Head of the Armenian Bankers' Association.

From 1998 to 2008: Chairman of the Armenian Central Bank; on March 2, 2005, was re-elected to the post for a seven-year term.

From 2005 to 2007: Head of the Inter-Governmental Bank Council.

April 9, 2008: Appointed prime minister of Armenia by the Armenian president.
