The city of Ivanovo

The city of Ivanovo is the administrative centre of Ivanovo Region and one of Russia's rapidly developing textile and research centres. The city's total housing area is 8.7 million square metres. The population is 430,000.

Founded in 1871, the city was called Ivanovo-Voznesensk until 1932.

Light industry, textiles and construction were traditional for the city, while machine-building plants, including a lorry cranes plant, a textile engineering plant, a machine-tools plant, an instrument-making plant, a chemical plant and other enterprises were built later. At present there are more than 16,500 commercial entities registered in Ivanovo.

Ivanovo is also considered to be a students' city with 18 higher educational institutions, including medical, textile and agricultural academies, an architecture university, a chemical technology university and a state university among others.

Currently, the city is witnessing a boom in retail trade and services. Some of the prerequisites for a tourism industry are also present in the city.
