Novokuznetsk is situated in the basin of the Tom River, a large tributary of the Ob. The city has all the major industrial enterprises of the Kemerovo Region, including metallurgical, aluminium, and ferroalloys plants and coal-mining, power engineering, engineering, and metalworking enterprises.
Coal is the main mineral mined in Novokuznetsk. There are also building materials deposits and oil and gas showings within the city limits.
Novokuznetsk is listed among the 84 most polluted cities, with the maximum contamination level registered here from time to time. However, the situation has improved in the past ten years due to the construction of purification facilities at all enterprises without exception, and the shutdown of hazardous plants such as the cement works.
The main trends in the work to improve the city environment are as follows:
- Large-scale construction of nature conservation and purification facilities to reduce harmful emissions from the operating enterprises;
- Structural transformations in industry, power engineering and transport;
- Tangible cuts in the production of intermediate products, such as sinter, pig iron, steel, etc.
The city boasts 17 centres for cultural and leisure activities, 42 libraries, two theatres and three theatrical studios, seven cinemas, three parks, a circus, a planetarium, and a sports complex. Other cultural centres include the Creative Unions Club, the Kolorit (Coloration) creative association, the Collection art show, a dancing room, and four museums.
Purposeful work has been conducted in the city of late to restore its historical and cultural monuments. Cultural events, such as the Days of Latvia and Kuzbass, an international jazz festival, shows and festivals of children's theatre companies, exhibitions of local artists' works and amateur performers' contests have become traditional.
There are 116 general secondary schools in Novokuznetsk, including four lyceums and 13 gymnasiums, 245 nursery schools, 20 additional educational institutions, seven children & teen physical fitness clubs, the city's Advanced Teacher Training Institute, a management and marketing school (No 99), and some specialised schools, including an ecology school (No 4), a specialist English language school (No 72), and an economics school (No 44). There is also a Personal Enhancement Centre, a business college, and a cultural dialogue centre.
Novokuznetsk has eleven schools affiliated with certain universities, and 39 schools offering advanced placement programmes.
74 Novokuznetsk schools run 218 classes for children with disabilities.
There are nine research institutes in Novokuznetsk, two universities and four university branches.
